What an evening!

by Mr. Parker

As a staff member of this great institution, I am so proud of our music department. In fact, the night of their fall concert, my buttons were popping off of my shirt. That’s how proud I was of the sixty-plus students.

Under the direction of Ms. Larson, Ms. Jones, and Mr. Jewkes, the music department raised the bar for us all. It was one special evening. There were more than 20 musical numbers performed.

The combined choirs, concert choirs, and the junior high choirs were awesome. The Rolling Rocks, the guitar ensemble, and the beginning and intermediate strings performed to perfection.

You kids are awesome! Even the two member band was well-received by the more-than-200 in attendance.

From the oldest person on campus: thank you! I love you all!

Snowden movie offers inside look at Edward Snowden’s life of secrecy

by Keegan Beck

On September 16, 2016, the remarkable story of Edward Snowden was released in theaters across the nation. The movie, fittingly called Snowden, is full of action, intensity, hardship, and hope. In my opinion, it is a must-see movie.

“I don’t see myself as a hero because what I’m doing is self-interested: I don’t want to live in a world where there’s no privacy and therefore no room for intellectual exploration and creativity.”

-Edward Snowden –

Generally, the movie tells the story of Snowden’s life. Previously a top contractor, Edward Snowden leaves his job at the National Security Agency. He knows that a virtual mountain 0f data is being gather to track down all forms of digital communication, just not for the foreign governments and terrorists, but for ordinary Americans. When he decides to leak this classified information, the question arises: is he a traitor or a hero?

Snowden is such an incredible story that Oliver Stone (Director) has written and put together on the screen. It shows in the film that it takes courage to do what might look like something bad, but it is right. Edward Snowden took that courage and showed the American people that the NSA was looking in on their own country. It shows what it takes to show and tell what’s really happening. Stone is an excellent storyteller; capturing small, important details is very characteristic of his films.

The actors were a huge part of the film because they showed real emotion, and it felt realistic. The actor that played Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), took the part seriously and had a voice and mannerisms similar to Edward Snowden. He did an excellent job in this film and all the other actors and actresses did amazing as well. The cinematography was really good – it felt like the audience was constantly at the edge of their seat, not knowing what was coming next. The sequences with the computers were just mind blowing. Overall, I would give Snowden a 5-star rating.

Dinner reception for Madame Rene a success

by Brenna Ottesen

During last Friday’s dinner reception for Mme. Rene, the students of Rockwell performed for the crowd. First, the beginner and intermediate strings played “Tango” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” This was followed by the Junior High choir who performed “Donna Nobis” and “Chariot’s Coming.” Afterwards the High School choir sang “Shenandoah.”

After these performances, Madame Rene stood to say a few words, which were translated by Tania Young. She spoke about the people in her country, and how to look at them would make you very distressed. She spoke about how beautiful our home seemed to her, and the hopes she had for her own people. Her hopes of building a school, and empowering the women of Haiti with possibilities. After these comments, the evening ended with all visitors filing into the gym to watch a dance performance by Rockwell Dance Co.

iPhone 7, iOS 10 bring exciting tech updates

by Keegan Beck

On September 7, Apple held their annual event in San Francisco, California. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, was very excited to announce upcoming features for Apple. On Tuesday they announced the release of iOS 10, along with updates for the app store, ConnectEd, and many more great tools and resources.

There are so many rich features with these new Apple products, and the Apple team is very very excited to announce their part to make Apple customers happy and excited for the things in Apple’s future. They announced all sorts of things that you should be excited for even though if you are Microsoft person. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, started off the event on the updates of Apple Music.

“There are 17 million subscribers on [Apple Music],” Cook said. “There have been 140 billion total apps that have been downloaded on the App store.”

This coming holiday, Apple is bringing the classic Nintendo Super Mario to the app store. It will be titled Super Mario Run.

Later in the event, Cook announced that the iPhone 7 is the best product that Apple employees and users will ever experience. Part of the iPhone 7 update included removing antennas spanning across the back of the device for a cleaner, sleeker look. The phone will still come in gold, rose gold, and grey, but they are bringing two new colors – black and jet black. All phones will have a high gloss finish.

The iPhone body has also been reengineered to be IP67 dust and water resistant, so it will hold up to splashes and even submersion in water. The battery life for both the iPhone 7 and 7S will be the longest-lasting. Those upgrading from previous iPhones will see two additional hours of battery life on average.

Rockwell students are excited about the update. However, the wireless earbud situation seems to worry some students.

“I can’t wait to lose all my wireless earbuds,” said sophomore Logan Card.

Headphones will be available that connect through the lightning port, and users will be able to use adapters so they can continue using their wired headphones.

“I’m really excited for the Bluetooth earbuds,” said sophomore Adeline Smith.

With the continued updates in technology, it will be interesting to see what Apple comes up with next.

Gene Wilder, Willy Wonka!

“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination, take a look and you’ll see into your imagination. We’ll begin with a spin traveling in the world of my creation, what we’ll see will defy explanation.” – Willy Wonka

Gene Wilder – we all know him as Willy Wonka. He created a room where everything inside is edible: the trees, floor, grass, and much more. The film was based on the books written by Roald Dahl, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Charlie and the Glass Elevator.

“Whenever I watched Willy Wonka as a kid it made me crave chocolate.” -Amber Coleman

Unfortunately, Wilder passed away on August 29th, 2016. Rest in peace Gene Wilder.
